American Indian and Alaska Native Contributions to Public Health

The indigenous people of the Americas—American Indians and Alaska Natives— have practiced the art of medicine and wellness for many thousands of years. Therefore, it is no surprise that they have made substantial contributions to public health.

American Indian and Alaska Native people experience many health issues more frequently and more severely when compared with other Americans. Historical trauma and socioeconomic conditions are among the many factors that contribute to these disparities. CDC is committed to working with tribes and leaders across Indian Country to improve the health and safety of AI/AN people.
