Blood Glucose Screening Rates Among Minnesota Adults With Hypertension, Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, 2011

The figure depicts how the final analytic sample of adults with diagnosed hypertension, complete data on diabetes or prediabetes diagnosis, and complete covariate data was derived. There were 15,401 Minnesota adults surveyed in the 2011 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System. Of these, 33 were missing information on hypertension diagnosis and were excluded; the 10,609 adults who did not have hypertension were also excluded. Of the remaining 4,759 adults who reported a diagnosis of hypertension, 912 were missing data related to body mass index, education, smoking, diabetes diagnosis or prediabetes diagnosis and were excluded, leaving 3,847 adults with self-reported diagnosed hypertension. The 3,847 adults with self-reported diagnosed hypertension and complete covariate data were grouped into categories on the basis of their diabetes or prediabetes diagnosis and recent history of screening for diabetes. A total of 798 adults with self-reported hypertension also reported a diabetes diagnosis. Of those without a diabetes diagnosis, 449 reported hypertension and a prediabetes diagnosis. The remaining 2,600 individuals all had hypertension and no self-reported diabetes or prediabetes. Among these individuals, 1,727 reported having been screened for diabetes within the past 3 years (referred to as no diagnosis, screened) and 873 reported no blood glucose screening in the past 3 years (referred to as no diagnosis, unscreened).

Figure. Flow diagram describing cohort with hypertension (N = 3,847), classified according to diabetes status, prediabetes status, and self-reported blood glucose screening for diabetes in the last 3 years, Minnesota Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS), 2011. Abbreviations: BMI, body mass index; screened, self-reported blood glucose screening.
