        BRIEF

No Financial Disincentive for Choosing More Healthful Entrées on Children’s Menus in Full-Service Restaurants

This flowchart begins with the 200 top-grossing restaurant chains in the Restaurants & Institutions 2009 list. Next, 110 restaurant chains were not identified as full-service according to the North American Industry Classification System and excluded; 90 restaurant chains identified as full-service by the North American Industry Classification System were included. Next, the 15 restaurant chains were excluded: 6 because they were not identified as full-service according to the Children’s Menu Assessment (2 were buffet, and 4 were “fast-casual”); 1 because it was closed; and 8 because they did not have a children’s menu. Seventy-five full-service restaurant chains had a children’s menu. Seventeen restaurant chains were then excluded because their children’s menu did not have at least 1 more healthful option. The final analytic sample included 58 restaurant chains that had at least 1 more healthful option on the children’s menu.

Figure. Inclusion and exclusion criteria for study on children’s menus. Abbreviations: NAICS, North American Industry Classification System; CMA, Children’s Menu Assessment.
