For our first year, Preventing Chronic Disease will use original works suggestive of folk art for our covers, as a reminder of whom we serve through our research and programs. Fundamentally, public health is about people; their health, their communities, their cultures, and the privileges and disadvantages that affect their well-being.

The image for our inaugural issue emphasizes the individual's connection to a larger cultural heritage. The African American woman holds a striking pose suggesting multiple interpretations — celebration, power, fluidness — within a specific ethnic tradition. The light shining behind her body and the rich red background color illustrate strength and courage in facing life's challenges.
