Notice to Readers: Injury-Related Mortality Reports Database Available on Internet

WISQARS™ (Web-based Injury Statistics Query and Reporting System), pronounced "whiskers," is an interactive system that provides injury-related mortality data useful for research and for making informed public health decisions. Mortality data for 1981--1997 are produced in two report formats: 1) Injury Mortality Reports, which can be used to determine injury deaths and death rates for specific external causes of injuries, and 2) Leading Causes of Death Reports, which can be used to determine the number of injury-related deaths relative to the number of other leading causes of death in the United States or in individual states. The report is available at http://www.cy118119.com/ncipc/wisqars .

Both reports are available by year, age, race, sex, Hispanic origin, and state. Reports can be requested by 5year age ranges (e.g., 0--4 years or 5--9 years) or a custom-defined range (e.g., 13--19 years or all 6-year-olds only). Race categories are white, black, American Indian/Alaskan Native, Asian and Pacific Islander, and other (all nonwhite and nonblack and may include other races not listed). In addition, Injury Mortality Reports can be requested by these specific definitions and other parameters (e.g., a report for a mechanism/cause and manner/intent in a specific state by sex and race).
