During the first quarter of fiscal year 1982, urban rat-control
programs in 56 communities achieved maintenance status* in 910
blocks
and identified 1,231 environmentally improved blocks (EIB).**
Program
services were provided to almost 2.8 million people in over 19,000
blocks.
Since 1969, local programs have provided services benefiting
almost 9 million people in approximately 61,000 blocks. Of these
blocks, 17,896 remain in operational areas, but 43,046 have been
removed from these areas and classified as EIB. As a result of
program accomplishments, 7.7 million people now live in rat-free,
environmentally improved neighborhoods.
*Blocks that have limited environmental deficiencies and are
essentially rat-free.
**Blocks that have remained in maintenance for at least 1 year and
no
longer require intensive rat control efforts.
