Dr. Julie Gerberding to Address National Influenza Vaccine Summit Annual Meeting in Atlanta to Address 2005 - 2006 Influenza Vaccine Issues

        WHO:

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and
the American Medical Association (AMA) will co-host more than 150 private and public health providers, vaccine manufacturers, and professional medical and health organizations for the fifth annual National Influenza Vaccine Summit, an annual meeting that focuses on the prevention of annual (i.e., "seasonal") influenza.

        WHAT:

Summit participants will meet to review the 2005-06 influenza
season to date, to identify and assess influenza vaccine and vaccination activities undertaken in 2005-06, to discuss issues experienced during the 2005-2006 influenza vaccination season and to develop vaccination strategies and activities that could be implemented for future influenza seasons to foster effective use of influenza vaccines and high immunization rates.

Conference topics include: implementation of influenza immunization recommendations; influenza vaccine distribution and administration, including December and later; influenza vaccine supplies; processes and practices related to distributing and shipping influenza vaccine; ensuring and improving access to influenza vaccine, including to people who are at high risk for serious complications from influenza; federal and state government roles in a vaccine shortage or delay, and efforts to encourage health care worker influenza vaccination.

        WHEN:

        January 24 - 25, 2006
Convening Tuesday at 7:50 a.m. and adjourning Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.
CDC director Dr. Julie Gerberding will address the Summit during the Tuesday morning opening session at 8:10 a.m. At 8:30 a.m., Dr.
Gerberding and Dr. J. Edward Hill, AMA President, will be available to the press in attendance only in Valencia 3. A call-in telephone line will not be available.

        WHERE:

Crowne Plaza Buckhead, Noble Ballroom, 3377 Peachtree Rd. NE., Altanta, 404-264-1111

        BACKGROUND:

The National Influenza Vaccine Summit was initiated in 2001 in response to major delays in the production and distribution of the nation's influenza vaccine supply during the 2000-2001 influenza season.

The summit has evolved into an informal partnership between the CDC and AMA with an executive committee and eight working groups that collaborate year-round on relevant issues concerning influenza vaccine production, distribution, and administration systems.

Members of the media are asked to check-in at the conference registration table. There will be a media table with telephone lines for print reporters and an area for cameras with sound connections for broadcast media.
