CDC Releases Tips for Parents and Educators on Electronic Media and Youth Violence

        What:

Technology is useful for developing social and communication skills, but can pose risks to adolescent health and safety.

To help parents and educators better understand and address "electronic aggression," (any kind of aggression perpetrated through technology which also includes any type of harassment or bullying), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is releasing two new resources. Each features:

        • A review of most current research
        • Examples to help parents and educators identify electronic aggression
        • Prevention tips for parents and caregivers
        • Preventions strategies for educators and educational policy makers
        • Prevention tactics for school districts, policy makers and parents

        Who:

These resources were developed by CDC's National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control, and the Adolescent Health Goal Team.

        Where:

Electronic Media and Youth Violence is available at http://www.cy118119.com/ncipc/dvp/electronic_aggression.htm.

        Editor's note:

Electronic Media and Youth Violence: A CDC Issue Brief for Educators and Caregivers was created in part from information in a special issue of the Journal of Adolescent Health. This journal supplement summarized the data from an expert panel meeting convened by CDC in September 2006. For more information, visit: http://www.cy118119.com/ncipc/dvp/electronic_aggression.htm.
