        Synopsis for September 13, 2002

State Specific Prevalence of Obesity Among Adults with Disabilities - Eight States and the District of Columbia, 1998-1999

Data from eight states and the District of Columbia indicate that people with disabilities are more likely than people without disabilities to experience obesity. Information gathered from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, a random digit dial telephone survey conducted by state health departments, indicate that for adults 18 years of age and older in these states, 18.4% reported a Body Mass Index of 30 or greater, with 16.5% of people without disabilities and 27.4% of people with disabilities in the obese category. People with disabilities report obesity at higher rates regardless of age group, sex, race, or Hispanic ethnicity. Among those with disabilities, women, African-Americans, Hispanics, and people 45 to 64 years of age report the highest rates of obesity.

Progress Toward Global Dracunculiasis Eradication, June 2002

Progress is rapidly being made in the global eradication of dracunculiasis (Guinea worm disease).

This report provides an update on the status of the global campaign to eradicate dracunculiasis (Guinea worm disease). The disease remains endemic in 13 countries in sub-Saharan Africa. The major remaining impediment to realizing the goal of eradicating dracunculiasis (Guinea worm disease) is the civil war in southern Sudan. In 2001 Sudan reported 49,471 (78%) of the 63,717 cases reported from all endemic countries. All 12 other affected countries reported only 14,246 cases. Solid progress is being made in all 12 endemic countries outside of Sudan, where the objective is to stop transmission of the disease by next year.
